Meet Caileigh Robson, the Community Manager at Old East Village’s Libro Credit Union! Located at 874 Dundas Street, this community minded credit union is looking to be a staple in the Old East Village. Opening in 2019, Libro offers full-service banking, right in the heart of OEV, with a big difference. “The big banks, they report to their shareholders, Libro reports to the people who bank to them. When you open up an account at Libro, you purchase a membership share, and then that gives you a say in the direction that Libro goes,” Robson says.
Libro’s OEV branch opened in 2019 after TD’s branch in the area closed down. Community members approached Libro, says Robson, and requested a branch location in the area. “The community asked us to be here, and some of the community doesn't even know that we're here, so just trying to spread the word that Libro is here. We're here. We're dedicated to the Old East Village,” She says. “We offer everything from business accounts, business lending, personal accounts, wealth management, for personal owners, business owners, we’re a full service bank.” There were struggles after the branch opened, with the COVID-19 pandemic followed by mass construction in OEV, but momentum has been building!

Currently, Libro works with several businesses in the Old East Village Business District, but Robson says she’d like to see more. “We're the only bank in the area. We're open to doing business with all the other businesses in the old East Village, and encourage them to come check us out, ask questions, see what we can do, even compare what their existing bank has to offer.” Robson adds that as a community based organization, the values of Libro fit in well with Old East Village.

Speaking of the OEV community, Robson says that Libro strives to be a good neighbour to the area, supporting local business wherever they can. For example, bringing in lunch or coffee from a local business whenever they have a meeting. “We're a community based, purpose based organization, which I think goes well with a lot of the values that we see in Old East Village,” she says. “It seems like Libro would be a great fit for most of the people that live and work here.”

Libro’s Old East Village branch is quickly approaching its sixth anniversary, and Robson is hoping that despite the occasional challenge in OEV, there’s a bright future. “People that live and work here, they want to see Old East Village shine the way it should be,” she says. “And we know we have challenges that take away from that sometimes, but just trying to focus on the positive and help each other out.”
Libro Credit Union is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and from 9 am to 12pm on Saturday.
