Meet Veer Sansanwal, one of the business partners behind High Street by Delhi Gang! Located in the former home of the St. Regis Tavern, this restaurant wants to become a local favourite in Old East Village! “We want to make (High Street) a social place where every age group can come enjoy with friends and have a good time,” Veer says. “We do soft drinks, hot drinks, we’re getting our liquor license, we have authentic Indian food…open mic nights, karaoke nights. We’re open to do everything.”

Veer came to Canada in 2018, working several jobs, including six years as a truck driver. He says he had always wanted to work for himself, and his cousin and fellow business partner Kritik Sherawat, had the same plan. After looking at several other locations in the GTA and London area, Veer says the more than a century old building hooked him immediately. “I like history, and when I saw this building, I thought ‘yeah, that’s it;’ it just clicked,” Veer says. “I always wanted to keep my place rustic,old-ish vibe with a modern flair.” After three months of renovations, High Street officially opened on February 1st, 2025.

The restaurant serves Indian food with a twist, with things like butter chicken poutine and malai tikka sliders, along with more traditional fare like shahi paneer and dal makhni. Veer says his favourite part of the business is serving people, “when I see people coming here, drinking, having Indian food, enjoying the atmosphere and sitting outside, it’s great. I like it when they enjoy themselves and drop good reviews,” he says with a smile.

In addition to the food, High Street hosts several events, including open mic and karaoke nights, live music, performances, and even a few birthday parties. “I’m open to everything, I’m here to serve the people,” he says. “If it’s not in my hands, I’ll bring it to my hands and I’ll serve it to the people.”

Looking to the future, Veer says the goal is to have High Street be packed all the time by the end of the year. In a few years? He wants to see High Street everywhere. “Jack Astor, Shoeless Joes, they’re in every plaza around North America,” he says. “I want to see High Street like that.”

High Street by Delhi Gang is open Monday to Friday from 11 am to 2 am, and hosts several events throughout the week, including Open Mics every Thursday from 9 pm to 11 pm, Karaoke on Saturday from 8 pm to 12 am, and live music every Sunday.
