Meet Michaelanne Hathaway, the owner of Stache Fabrics & Notions and one of our Associate Participants! Located at the Market at Western Fair District, Stache Fabric and Notions is a community focused quilt shop focused on high quality and fun fabrics. “We’re also focused on helping people in the community be as creative as they possibly can with the fabric,” Hathaway says. Stache Fabrics has been located in the market for the past two years, but is coming up on its ninth anniversary this year.

Hathaway comes from a family of fibre artists, with her mother, father, grandmother, aunt, and even siblings all picking up some sort of fibre art. “I wasn’t allowed to watch TV unless I had a set of carders in my hands to brush out wool before it was spun into yarn,” she says. “Fibre was always in our home and, so to speak, it’s in my veins.” She picked up quilting around 20 years ago, and has stuck with it since, both as a hobby and a career.
Stache Fabrics & Notions got its start as an online store, after the owner of the store Hathaway was working at announced her retirement. After a year and a half of online sales, they moved to their first brick and mortar store, located at King and Clarence. After five years, they moved to the Market, and have fallen in love with the location. “We love the community here in the market, the community of the vendors, and the community of neighbors and people who come and visit us here at the market,” Hathaway says. “It feels like home, like we should have always been here.”

Stache Fabric & Notions offers a wide variety of modern fabric, patterns, and tools for all sewing and quilting enthusiasts. They offer local pick-up and delivery, along with shipping across the country. They even have customers all the way out in British Columbia! “I love coming in and speaking with our customers,” Hathaway says. “Whether it's sitting down and designing something with them, or seeing the excitement of somebody who’s just come in and they want to start.”
Since they came to the Market, Hathaway says that people will stop in on a whim and get inspired. “This younger generation is picking up sewing again or quilting, whether it's sewing clothing for their children, or dog bandanas, or bags, or quilting,” she says. “Being here in this location is fun because we have a lot of people who come in specifically for us, but we're also exposing a whole group of other people.” She adds that she looks forward to seeing fibre arts grow in the future.

Stache Fabric and Notions is open by appointment from Monday through Friday and from 8am to 3pm on Saturdays and 10am to 2pm on Sundays! Make sure you check out their online store too!
