Meet Roxy, the heart-and-soul of Foxy Roxy at Maymo’s Fries! Located just off Dundas on Elizabeth Street, the homemade fast-food joint has been cooking up classics like burgers, fries, and poutine for the past six and a half years. “My family always said I should have a restaurant,” Roxy says. “I’ve always loved cooking, I love to feed people, and I put my love in my food.”
🎨When you step up to the counter at Maymo’s, you’ll see that the stand is oozing with personality. It’s covered in knick-knacks, bumper stickers, and art from diverse sources. A small seating area is located inside the stand, where you can sit and take everything in. Seating is also available outside if you want to enjoy the weather while you dig into a delicious burger.
🍽️Roxy began renting the stand after more than 24 years at the London Health Sciences Centre. “I just happened to drive down Elizabeth Street, and they just put up the ‘for rent’ sign. I saw it and felt like it was a ‘sign!’” Roxy says, laughing. “It’s had some very stressful moments, but overall, I love it, I love the people, people love me.”
🍴While it has its challenges, Roxy says the community is what makes running the stand worth it. “I had a situation where my fridge needed to be repaired…it was about two thousand dollars and I didn’t have that,” she recounts. “The community did a GoFundMe and we raised enough money to fix my fridge.”
🍟What does Roxy recommend you get if you come by? “The burger. If I had a dollar for every time somebody ate the burger and said ‘oh my God, that’s the best burger I’ve had,’ I’d be rich off that,” she says. She also recommends the poutine, which we can say from experience is worth the recommendation.
Maymo’s Fries is open for business from 11:30 to 7:30 Tuesday through Friday and 12 to 6 on Monday and Saturday.
